History

BioBasque Strategy

In 2000, the Basque Government advocated providing a boost to the Basque economy in order to adapt to an increasingly changing and competitive world, making a strategic commitment to new strategic sectors based on knowledge and innovation. This resulted in 2002 in the first strategy designed specifically for developin biosciences in Spain: the 2010 BioBasque Strategy.

Basque Biocluster

It was constituted on 17 October 2010 as the “Basque Biocluster” association, which was made up of 14 founding companies:

  • AJL OPHTALMIC
  • BIOFTALMIK
  • BIOLAN MICROBIOSENSORES
  • BIOTECHNOLOGY INSTITUTE (BTI)
  • DOMINION PHARMAKINE
  • HISTOCELL
  • IDOKI SCF TECHNOLOGIES
  • INKOA SISTEMAS
  • INNOVATIVE TECHNOLOGIES IN BIOLOGICAL SYSTEMS (INNOPROT)
  • LABORATORIUM SANITATIS (LABSAN)
  • LABORATORIOS BROMATOLOGICOS ARABA
  • NORAY BIOINFORMATICS
  • ONE WAY LIVER GENOMICS (OWL GENOMICS)
  • PROGENIKA BIOPHARMA

Basque Health Cluster

Years later, after a strategic review focusing on the sector’s market and identifying the health sector as the main niche activity of its members, the Board of Directors decided to broaden the cluster’s sphere of action. Consequently, in January 2017, the Basque Biocluster became the Basque Health Cluster. Healthcare delivery, medical devices and digital health would now become part of the cluster.

Tenth anniversary durign the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic: Celebrating 10 years of service

When the pandemic struck in 2020, it highlighted the importance of having a bio-health sector with productive capacity. The pandemic crisis highlighted the need to invest in the bio-health sector as an essential component. The cluster has managed the crisis by informing, coordinating and intervening to speed up urgent responses, in collaboration with public and private companies and institutions. The cluster, now in its tenth year, has become the backbone of the Basque bio-health ecosystem with a growing number of members.
