The Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities, announced yesterday the people and entities awarded with the National Innovation and Design Awards 2024, as “the most important recognition in Spain in the fields of innovation and design”.
BIOLAN has been recognized as National Innovation Award in the modality of Small and Medium Innovative Company 2024.
BIOLAN, a Basque biotechnology company, has become through innovation a leader in the international market of biosensorics applied to food control and safety, and has also approached diagnostics in the health sector with its own innovative products.
This award is a recognition of BIOLAN’s business trajectory, an example of a firm and unquestionable commitment to innovation as a central axis of its business strategy and competitiveness.
BIOLAN Microbiosensors is a Basque biotechnological company, a leader in the application of biosensors in the food sector, addressing the widespread need for rapid, simple, and effective analytical and diagnostic tools for food quality and safety control since 2009.
Throughout its journey, BIOLAN has developed and marketed various analytical and diagnostic tools, primarily based on biosensors, for the quantification of parameters of interest in the food industry. This has led to a diversification of markets, ranging from the fishing sector with histamine determination, crustacean control with sulfites, the dairy sector for lactose quantification, the meat sector with nitrite measurement, as well as solutions for measuring salt in all types of foods, among others.
In 2014, the company identified the opportunity to direct all its scientific and technological knowledge towards the health sector to provide new solutions for health diagnosis and monitoring, betting on a new line of business focused on this sector, BIOLAN HEALTH , introducing Point of Care (PoC) devices to the market, for example, for diagnosing lactose intolerance, and rapid tests based on immunoassays like COVID-19 antigen and antibody tests.
It was in 2017 when BIOLAN understood that the digitization of its products and processes represented an opportunity to improve its competitiveness. Thus, the decision was made to undertake the digital transformation of its products and processes by enhancing the connectivity of its biosensors and developing a data capture, analysis, and visualization platform, a new product line launched to the market in 2021. This effort in digitization of a biotechnological company like BIOLAN was recognized with the National Connected Industry 4.0 Award in 2022.
Innovation is innate to BIOLAN, based on the belief that a value proposition with innovative solutions is the key to success and competitiveness. This commitment has led the company to successfully compete in over sixty countries with high-value-added products in both health and food sectors, with an ever-expanding product catalog, allowing for sustainable business growth.
Currently, BIOLAN’s innovation strategy continues to focus on two major trends: digitalization and sustainability. From there, the company works beyond technological innovation, also addressing innovation in manufacturing processes, internal management, labor well-being, and its commitment to environmental respect.
This commitment to innovation underlies the entire organization, involving a multidisciplinary professional team of over 100 people, making it possible for BIOLAN to continue achieving successes and receiving recognitions such as the National Innovation Award 2024.
