On 21 June we will be holding the Basque Health Cluster EGUNA at the KURSAAL in Donostia, an event that is celebrating its second edition and with which the Basque cluster of bioscience and health companies establishes a benchmark event for the different agents that make up our ecosystem.
The health and biosciences sector is becoming increasingly important in the Basque Country and has experienced major growth in recent years. From the cluster, within the framework of the 2024-2027 Strategic Plan on which we are working, in collaboration with all the agents that make up the sector, we face all the future challenges with great enthusiasm and desire with the aim of becoming a sector of greater weight and a benchmark within the Basque and international industry.
On this special day, we will present the José Miguel Azkoitia award for the second time. José Miguel Azkoitia, who passed away in 2018, was an Industrial Engineer from the Polytechnic University of Catalonia and a Doctor from the University of the Basque Country. During his fruitful professional career he developed academic activities linked, among others, to the University of the Basque Country and the Complutense University of Madrid. He was also Director of Health Business Development at TECNALIA. His research career was focused on the areas of Biomedical Engineering, Health Technologies, Robotics and ICTs. Combining these activities with the dissemination of science and technology in the media. Thus, the Basque Health Cluster presents the Jose Miguél Azkoitia award in memory of the person who was one of the actors who dedicated the most effort and determination to activate the Bio-Health sector in the Basque Country. With this award, the Cluster aims to distinguish those people or entities that work to promote the sector and/or have had a positive impact on its development.
In the first edition, the award was given to the Spri Group for its commitment and contribution to the consolidation of the bioscience sector in the Basque Country. This year 2023, the winner of the award is Marisa Arriola, Managing Director of BIC Gipuzkoa Berrilan, in recognition of all her commitment and work over the years in favour of the Biosciences and Health sector in the Basque Country and especially in Gipuzkoa.
María Luisa Arriola is the General Manager of BIC Gipuzkoa Berrilan and has a long professional career. She is a lecturer in Entrepreneurship-Intrapreneurship in the MBA-EMBA of the University of Deusto Bilbao and a guest lecturer in the Master’s Degree in Organisational Psychology and Psychosocial Intervention of the UPV-EHU, as well as having given numerous conferences on entrepreneurial strategy and intrapreneurship in educational centres, institutions and organisations both nationally and internationally. In this sense, he represents a clear example of leadership in the promotion of egalitarian entrepreneurship and intra-entrepreneurship among future generations. She is one of the few women who, in the industrial world of Gipuzkoa in the 1990s, developed process re-engineering consultancy for the take-off of various organisations in the machine tool sector, importing trends from the USA to improve the competitiveness and results of the companies she supported.
